Causes and Consequences of Stress - 2689 Words
Stress, in one form or another, is a universal affliction. It does not discriminate based on age, race, income or culture. While not everyone experiences the same type or intensity, no one is immune from stress or its consequences. Certain groups experience stressors that are fairly specific to that group. Individuals with children will have some stressors that do not exist for those without children, married individuals will have episodes of stress that those who are unmarried do not experience, or those in one profession will experience different stressors than those in a different profession. This study will address the specific stress experienced by college students and their use of music as a coping mechanism in dealing with this stress. A stress experience consists of three major elements: The external stimuli, the internal response, and the interaction between the two (Burns, Labbà ©, Arke, Capeless, Cooksey, Steadman, Gonzales, 2002). The experience of stress arises when an individual perceives the demands of their environment to exceed his or her resources and endangering his or her well being (Thoma, La Marca, Brà ¶nnimann, Finkel, Ehlert, Nater, 2013). Some of the stress experienced by college students is similar to others in the same age group who live outside of the academic environment but, some stressors are unique to those who are pursuing higher education.
